Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini has been “scouted” by Man Utd, according to The Telegraph‘s James Ducker.
The journalist is usually very reliable when it comes to the Red Devils, and he claims that the “versatile” defender has his “admirers” among the club’s recruitment team.
Scalvini’s ability to play in multiple roles makes him an attractive target. Although he has played mostly as a centre-half over the past twelve months, there have been times when he has been picked to start as a holding midfielder.
In that context, you can see why United may be tempted to make a move for him, considering the positions they need to strengthen.
Scalvini could be the club’s third midfield addition
It is believed that Director of Football Jason Wilcox and Head of Recruitment Christopher Vivell have yet to make a decision on whether to further reinforce Michael Carrick’s options in the middle of the park.
Moves for the likes of Eduardo Camavinga and Manu Kone have been exploredd, but there are now suggestions that United won’t invest heavily in a third midfielder following the arrivals of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos.
Scalvini is said to be available for €40m (£34m), making him a cheaper option than either Camavinga or Kone (who could cost in excess of £50m). The Italian also has the added benefit of being a capable centre-back, where the club have had injury problems in recent seasons.

Man Utd may have competition for the player
Newcastle are believed to have a longstanding interest in Scalvini, while recent reports in the Italian media have claimed that Chelsea have made enquiries.
So far, though, neither club has made a formal offer for the 22-year-old, which means Carrick’s team are still in with a chance of snapping him up before the transfer window closes.
